5 Short Films for a Break

1) The endless beauty of the mountains: Canadian Rockies

Ι feel so thrilled every time I see this icy wilderness.

2) Also, when a fish is thinking

...its brain is like this.  This is the first time that the fishes' thinking process was videotaped. If you feel ready to take a deep in learning something more about neurons, take a look at this too.

3) What a squid does while listening to Cypress Hill.

This video below from the team over at Backyard Brains exists in the case that the previous video didn't blow your mind. First a minor detail: squids do not possess ears. However, the same impulses created when audio is converted to an electrical signal, like what happens inside a microphone, can actually be gently applied to tissue, in this case the dorsal side of a squid fin.

The video is a view through an 8x microscope zoomed in on the dorsal side of the caudal fin of the squid. We used a suction electrode to stimulate the fin nerve. Chromatophores are pigmeted cells that come in 3 colors: Brown, Red, and Yellow. Each chromatophore is lined with up to 16 muscles that contract to reveal their color.

A number of incredibly smart people even wrote a scholarly paper on the phenomenon aptly, find it here

4) Leave the squids, we are going to Mpalos, Crete.

Some of you wondered if this paradise really exists. That video below is the vivid proof of its existence.

5) And for the end, some rest for your eyes.

I am sure that you need some.

Déspina Kortesidou

Déspina Kortesidou was born with the April flowers sometime in the '90s in the sunny peninsula of Greece. She is a graduating master student of neuroscience & metabolism, and a born adventurer.

(3rd person statements sound so official, love it)

She founded In Whirl of Inspiration, back in 2011 when she was (just) a biology student, in the island of Crete. In Whirl of Inspiration started as a creative and writing outlet for when studying molecules, became too monotonous. Recently, she started writing a children book and a not-so-children's book about the civil war in Greece. She has a soft spot for cheese, elder people, and (her own) jokes, but can't tell any as she ruins them by laughing too early. She enjoys sharing advice for eating healthier, or inspiring people to cover themshelves with plants, color and confetti.

The other day I used some photos through the lense of Nick Brandt, for a bag that I was making (I will show it to you) and it took me much more time to make it than I was expecting. And that's because I was lost in these magnifique pictures of Africa, conjuring up stories about safaries and adventures in the vast savannah. Here it is, a truly epic vision of Africa. Enjoy the voyage!

After a 4 blast trip in Athens for a neuron-immunology conference, where I was trying to make ends meet with an upcoming disease and some serious times-spending at Pasteur Institute, back in a student's reality with a one-day educational trip to south Crete, to observe different kind of stones for the geology lesson. Rock Campus 2012 you were awesome! And now the right time came. The time that I was dreaming for from the previous Tuesday on my way to Athens. The time for some serious  rest in my warm pijamas, in my gorgeous bed. Activating sleep mode... cy...a... ZzzZZzzz...

After the Autumn's first Rain

rainy+day.jpg

Thank. god. it. started. raining. Well yes, today we will talk about the weather, like we are dating and we are pretty shy and we are talking about this, cause we can't think of anything better to break the ice between us. So, YES! The clouds remembered our existence. I can almost hear them saying: -dude, we haven't through rain there for ages. -Dude... You are right. Isn't it April when we last thrown them some cats and dogs? And they came! Basically, the funny thing is that either it rains here or not. It would not rain for months and then once it starts raining it never stops. For example, last year it was raining every day and night for almost a month. And no, I don't leave near tropical regions, but in Greece. What. the. hell.

That's it! Thanks for your patience with my little delirium, I just feel extremely happy that it's finally raining. That I am protected under my warm hood to smell the moist soil or (even better) that I am protected under my quilt while hearing the rain outside. Fall is finally here, for good at last!

Furthermore, if you shoot while the sun sets and its raining too, you may see this eary shade in your photos. Great isn't it?

T.G.I.F. #7: In the Woods

forest.jpg

My mind is lost in dark woods, covered with the morning dew. At each step creak beneath my feet layers of fallen leaves. Woodpeckers transform the trunks of trees into wooden sculptures. Orphaned sunbeams touch the ground while their siblings play with the tall branches.

A place that isn't affected by the laws of nature. Whales are swimming lazily among the ancient trees. Every now and then they swim to the sky to breathe, releasing jets of water and birds over the ridge of the trees. The sky floods with feathers and drops of water.

Wing flaps everywhere. It's an alarm! A golden eagle is approaching. He almost hangs in the blue as gravity doesn't influence him. Meters down, young branches, which are urging to fly like him, make their first steps into the thin air. They jump and swing gently until they touch the ground. They learn quickly though. The older brunches are doing already some pretty good stunts in the air.

The night comes and they are all preparing for the evening concert. Today the crickets from the far away forests are playing live.It will be a beautiful night!

In the forest outside Ushuaia,Argentina Adrián Villar Rojas creates with stone, wood and clay a  surreal dream of a full-size blue whale. The tree stumps on the whale makes you wonder if it’s it will slowly be claimed by the forest or perhaps it’s a temporary resident (via devid sketchbook ).Cornelia Konrads create illusion of weightlessness, where stacked objects like logs, fences, and doorways appear to be suspended in mid-air, reinforcing their temporary nature as if the installation is beginning to dissolve before your very eyes.

Exams. Done. -For Now

park+in+autumn2.jpg

I'm done. It's done. (At least for the next 2 months, but that's fine by me.) Exams eat shit, results please be good at me. Finally there is time to tidy and clean this barn... ehmm house of mine, cook something else apart from pasta and plan my upcoming vacations! Ι will visit some of the most beautiful corners of my country this summer, so be prepared for a lot of vacational madness!

In -hot- times like this, I tend to miss cooler seasons like spring and autumn. When you aren't afraid to stay 5' minutes under the sun and end up like a fried egg. Early-mid spring and early-mid autumn are the ideal seasons for me. (Remind me of this manifesto of mine again when the in the winter as I will be snowboarding, I will deny it all :P )

There will be always a special room in my heart for you little mushrooms!
